'Every death caused by COVID-19 is preventable': 20 more die of coronavirus in New Mexico as death toll approaches 5,000

The New Mexico Department of Health reported 20 additional COVID-19-related deaths this past week.

Total deaths in New Mexico as of Oct. 21 have reached nearly 5,000. Recent deaths relating to the coronavirus in New Mexico include people as young as their 30s and seniors in their 90s, as well as individuals with and without underlying conditions. 

"Every death caused by COVID-19 is preventable. We have the tools to protect ourselves, stop the spread of this virus, and spare more New Mexico families the pain of losing loved ones. Wear a mask. Get vaccinated," New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham tweeted on Oct. 15. 

The state also reported an additional 879 COVID-19 cases as of Oct. 14, according to KOB4, with a total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic 266,777. The highest number of new cases was in Bernalillo County which had 189 new cases last week. At present, 369 individuals in the state of New Mexico are hospitalized due to health problems relating to the coronavirus, according to a report from KOB4. 

More positively, 236,987 people have been verified as recovering from the coronavirus by the New Mexico Department of Health on Oct. 21. The department's site shows the number of people with positive coronavirus cases in each county and zip code in New Mexico and is searchable.
