New Mexico state Rep. Yvette Herrell praised six Democrats who voiced concerns relating to the energy provision initiative section of a recently drafted spending package worth $3.5 trillion.
"Glad to see my colleagues on the Democrat side speaking out. Our budget should not destroy good-paying jobs and sacrifice American energy independence just to satisfy Nancy Pelosi's radical base," Herrell (R-Santa Fe) wrote in a tweet.
Representatives Henry Cuellar, Vicente Gonzalez, Lizzie Fletcher, Sylvia Garcia, Marc Veasey, Filemon Vela and Colin Allred expressed their worries in a letter addressing House leaders, outlining the policies that are “targeting the U.S. oil, natural gas, and refining industries,” The Hill reported.
The officials also proposed various alternatives, such as the use of a methane fee on pollution from oil and gas industries. Though the two components fail to create as much carbon emissions as coal, excessive use still makes large contributions to the emissions currently warming up the planet and its atmosphere, according to The Hill.
“We firmly believe that the budget reconciliation bill should not unduly disadvantage any industry, and oppose the targeting of U.S. oil, natural gas, and refining with increased taxes and fees and the exclusion of natural gas production from clean energy initiatives,” wrote the lawmakers, all of whom represent districts in Texas.
In the Senate, Democrats currently hold an eight-vote majority, making them ineligible to be defectors.
“These inequitable policies will cost American jobs, move America farther away from energy independence, and will slow the country’s move toward a lower carbon future,” they wrote.
