The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta released COVID-19 guidelines this week, requiring masks and encouraging increased social distancing throughout the event.

Current protocols state masks will be required at all times indoors and in crowded outdoor areas as well as while boarding shuttles and park-and-ride busses within the park. All face coverings must have at least two layers of breathable material and must fully cover both the mouth and the nose, the guidance states.

“We are following the State Public Health Order guidelines,” Tom Garrity, a spokesperson for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, told KRQE. “We’re also following the guidelines from the CDC with respect to large events."

From Saturday, Oct. 2 - Sunday, Oct. 10, guests can visit Balloon Fiesta Park to watch as more than 600 hot air balloons take to the skies. While the event was postponed last year due to the onset of COVID-19, new guidance looks toward implementing safety protocols to ensure smooth sailing as this year's fiesta approaches.

This year's events will not include the Music Fiesta or Balloon Discovery Center in order to prevent additional risks. The popular special shaped balloons will be spaced across the park to promote distancing and a cashless option will be provided to purchase tickets.

Enforcement will be heavily reliant on self-policing, though some staff members will be on the lookout throughout the event, KRQE reports. Proof of vaccination will not be required upon entry.
