Less than half of New Mexican participants in a recent poll approve of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s job performance, but it was still slightly more than the number who disapprove.
Lujan Grisham's approval rating was 46% while her disapproval rating was 45%, according to the poll results released in a news story published Monday by NM Political Report.
NM Political Report contracted with Public Policy Polling, a Democrat polling firm based in Raleigh, N.C., to conduct the poll.
Lujan Grisham became the first Democrat Latina in U.S. history to be elected governor, according to her site, having previously served three terms in the U.S. House representing the state's 1st Congressional District.
The NM Political Report poll found that Grisham's job rating was better among certain groups who participated. Her rating was higher among Hispanic and Latinos, with 53% approving of Lujan Grisham's job performance. Her highest approval ratings came from among Democrats in the poll, with 79% approving and 13% disapproving.
Her disapproval rating among Republicans participating in the poll was 84% with only 9% of Republicans approving of her job performance.
Lujan Grisham did slightly better among independent voters in the poll with 33% approving of her job performance and 54% disapproving.
Participants also rated President Joe Biden's performance, with 47% approving and 45% disapproving, ratings very similar to Lujan Grisham's.
As for New Mexico U.S. senators, Martin Heinrich received a 42% percent approval rating and 34% disapproval rating, while Ben Ray Lujan received a 41% approval rating and a 40% disapproval rating.
The 682 registered voters from throughout New Mexico who participated in the poll were queried on Aug. 16 and 17, with a 3.8% margin of error on topline results.
