Proposed soccer stadium in voters' hands, with 'sort of a guarantee' for neighborhood

The Albuquerque City Council voted 7-2 on Aug. 16 to place a $50 million multiuse soccer stadium bond for the New Mexico United on the ballot for Nov.

Councilor Isaac Benton introduced a resolution to create a Community Benefits Agreement with whichever neighborhood gets directly affected by the soccer stadium, as multiple locations have been proposed, KRQE reports.

“It’s sort of a contract with the city in which we get sort of a guarantee that they will be looking out for us," Anna Padilla, the president of Barelas Neighborhood Association said. "And it’s a legally enforceable document. So instead of empty promises, if they don’t deliver, then we have legal recourse."

According to KRQE, the resolution would include an agreement with the neighborhood, the city and New Mexico United that guarantees beneficial services would be provided to that neighborhood in which the stadium stood.

The fate of the proposed stadium bond and project will now be decided by voters.

“We’ve been trying to advocate for just any neighborhood in which this is placed, because you know, as we learn more about community benefits agreements, it’s clear that anybody should have this type of document in hand before they agree to having it in their neighborhood,” Padilla said, according to KRQE.
