Republican lawmakers in New Mexico are demanding that Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham call a special session of the legislature to deal with what they see as her split personality on the state’s crime rate.

“You can’t be tough on crime and simultaneously be soft on criminals,” House Minority Whip Rod Montoya posted on Twitter.

Hailing the situation as a “public emergency,” Republican leaders recently penned a letter to Lujan Grisham where they called for immediate action based on their belief that “the increasing crime rate only seems to get worse with each passing day,” KOB4 reported.

Montoya stressed that nothing short of action will do.

"That's the real problem here,” he told KOB4. “We have a number of politicians who want to be soft on criminals and act like they are tough on crime.”

Before four Albuquerque Police Department officers were injured and a middle school student was killed while at school, Lujan Grisham told KOB4 that she was open to the idea of calling a special session to focus on the state’s public safety issues.

"Put your money where your mouth is," Montoya added. "That's exactly why we sent her a letter now. You said you're open to the idea, the public is clamoring for it, and let's see if she actually represents the people or not."
