The Albuquerque community remembers Bennie Hargrove, a 13-year-old boy who lost his life after an Aug. 13 school shooting at Washington Middle School.
Hargrove was shot six times by a classmate after trying to stop a violent confrontation between classmates during lunch, KOB4 reports.
Juan Saucedo was the 13-year-old boy who killed Hargrove, KOB4 reports. Saucedo's father told authorities that he noticed his gun was missing around noon but by the time he arrived at Washington Middle School his son was being arrested.
APS Superintendent Scott Elder and Washington Principal Modesta Hernandez made a written statement that was posted on the Albuquerque Public Schools website on the day of the shooting.
"With great sadness, I must inform you of a shooting that occurred on the Washington Middle School campus today that resulted in the death of one of our students and the arrest of another," the statement read. "This was an isolated incident that occurred outside the school building during lunch. No other students or staff were physically harmed, but many of us are hurting."
A candlelight vigil was held at the school Saturday, another KOB4 article said.
"We are just trying to honor our friend and get through this. He tried to save a life, and he was trying to stick up for another friend," Stephone Yarbrough, a 7th grader told KOB4.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover the funeral cost, KOB4 reports.
Classes resumed at Washington Middle School on Aug. 17.
