Luke Wysong of Cleveland High School was named its 2020-21 Gatorade New Mexico Boys Track & Field Player of the Year.

Gatorade has honored the best high school athletes for 36 years.

“Luke is, without question, a talented athlete and possesses a great deal of physical ability, but his work ethic and willingness to prepare is second to none,” Cleveland High head coach Kenny Henry said in a press release. “I have been around many great athletes, but Luke Wysong is the greatest competitor there is.”

Wysong is a 5-foot-10, 185-pound senior who helped the school win the state championship by clocking a Class 5A-record relay, according to the New Mexico Activities Association.

According to a press release, Wysong maintains a 3.24 weighted GPA and has already signed a National Letter of Intent to play football on scholarship at the University of New Mexico, which he will attend this fall. Wysong also is known throughout the community for his volunteer work with the Rio Rancho Fire Department and as a police department youth volunteer. He also donates his time locally as part of food-donation drives and has volunteered at multiple community service initiatives through his church youth group.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states in sports of high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field. One National Player of the Year in each sport is also awarded yearly.
