Albuquerque welcomes back 'energy and vibrancy' of cycling Masters Road National Championship

Cyclists will be hitting the road in Albuquerque when the 2021 Masters Road National Championship comes to town, as recently announced by the City of Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, and Visit Albuquerque.

The four-day cycling event will run August 5-8 with time trials starting Thursday. The racing will get started on Thursday with the Time Trial where men ages 65 and older and women ages 55 and older on a 20-kilometer course. Men 35-64 and women 25-54 will be racing on a 40-kilometer route. 

"We are honored to be welcoming back prestigious events such as the 2021 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships to our city as well as the energy and vibrancy this event will bring to our community," Tania Armenta, President and CEO of Visit Albuquerque, said in a release on the city's website. "Albuquerque is excited to welcome these world-class athletes — and their friends and families — to our city and looks forward to cheering them on this August."

The event is expected to bring more than 2,000 visitors to the city Visit Albuquerque told the Albuquerque Journal.

The newspaper also reported Armenta estimated the event would bring in roughly $1.1 million to the city in "direct visitor spending."

Albuquerque is also scheduled to host the event in 2022.
