Santa Fe County invites applications for tourism promotion funding

SANTA FE, NM - The Santa Fe County Lodgers’ Tax Advisory Board, in collaboration with the Santa Fe County Community Development Department’s Tourism & Marketing Division, has announced a call for applications for initiatives focused on advertising, publicizing, or promoting tourist attractions and tourism-related events within Santa Fe County. Program funding will be available from mid-December 2024 through June 30, 2025.

City continues routine food health inspections under new ordinance

This month, the updated Food Safety and Retail Ordinance (FSO) took effect. While public hearings for the adoption of new rules and training of food inspectors on the updated protocols required by the FSO occurred, the City has continued with pre-opening and complaint-based inspections to ensure restaurants and food service providers can continue to operate safely. From August 1 to August 23, the City conducted 92 inspections. Effective immediately, all food inspectors will resume routine inspections to ensure safety for our community.

Gabriel López, a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at The University of New Mexico (UNM), has been awarded one of six inaugural NSF Trailblazer Engineering Impact Awards. This $18 million initiative aims to support researchers with a history of creativity and innovation to explore new research areas. López's project, titled "TRAILBLAZER: Overcoming the Lignin Barrier for Valorization of Forest Biomass — A New Paradigm for Mitigation of Catastrophic Wildfires," will receive $3 million over three years starting September 1.

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center has initiated a new clinical trial to explore the efficacy of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in treating ovarian cancer. This surgical technique, typically used for digestive cancers, is being applied to ovarian cancer patients in hopes of improving outcomes.
