Bernalillo County announced its observance of National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day on Aug. 21, aligning with the nationwide endeavor to raise awareness about the hazards of synthetic opioids. The website KeepNMAlive is one of the multiple outreach initiatives the county is using to actively engage in public education, according to a press release.

The University of New Mexico announced on Aug. 19 that Eric Lang, an assistant professor in the Department of Nuclear Engineering, has been selected for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) program, according to a press release. This initiative, called the NRC Distinguished Faculty Advancement Program, offers assistance to empower recently appointed, pre-tenured faculty members like Lang to further develop their roles as educators and researchers within their respective university departments.

New Mexico State University (NMSU) reported on Aug. 21 that Patricia Sullivan has been awarded the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference community service-academia award by Great Minds in STEM, according to a press release. Sullivan serves as the associate dean for outreach and recruitment in the College of Engineering with a dual role in the Office of Research, Creativity and Economic Development.

On Aug. 18, the City of Albuquerque announced that the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Air Quality Control Board (Air Board) and the Environmental Improvement Board have scheduled a meeting to discuss potentially amending regulations for implementing California's latest motor vehicle emission standards, beginning with the model year 2027. The hearing is scheduled for Nov. 13, at 9:00 a.m. through Nov. 16.
