Survey reveals mixed experiences among UNM campus faculty

A recent survey conducted by Advance at the University of New Mexico (UNM) reveals a complex mix of organizational experiences and attitudes among full-time, main campus faculty. The Fall 2023 survey highlighted high levels of work and teaching well-being among faculty, but low levels of physical and psychological well-being. Despite the ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, faculty remained engaged with their work tasks and generally felt supported during the promotion and tenure process.


AmeriCorps seniors honored at Department of Senior Affairs ceremony

The Department of Senior Affairs, in collaboration with Chief Administrative Officer Samantha Sengel, recently held a pinning ceremony to honor members of the AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent (FGP) and Senior Companion Programs (SCP). The event celebrated the remarkable contributions of volunteers aged 55 and above who have been instrumental in guiding students towards higher academic achievement as Foster Grandparents. They also provide care for homebound individuals as Senior Companions. A total of 18 volunteers were recognized during the ceremony.

Hannah Norberto, a resident of Sheep Springs in the Navajo Nation, has faced significant challenges throughout her life. Despite growing up in a loving home, she and her family often struggled to meet basic needs due to financial constraints. Norberto recalls times when they could not afford essential services like electricity and utilities. "I remember times where my family often struggled with the financial strain of maintaining essential services like electricity and utilities in our Native community," Norberto said.

New Mexico State University Professor Receives Grant to Study Robotics in Chile Pepper Production

"In 2020, Mahdi Haghshenas-Jaryani, New Mexico State University mechanical and aerospace engineering assistant professor, began studying the use of robotics in chile pepper farming. Now, Haghshenas-Jaryani has been awarded a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The three-year, $727,981 grant supports his project, 'Robot-Enabled Soil and Crops Monitoring for Precision Agriculture and Water Management in New Mexico Green Chile Pepper Farming.'
