Chamber seeks tutors for Albuquerque Reads ahead of next school year

Albuquerque Reads, an initiative focused on enhancing literacy skills among young students, is gearing up for the upcoming 2025-26 school year. As the current academic year concludes, the program is actively seeking to recruit additional tutors to support its mission.

The program operates in three Title 1 elementary schools: Atrisco, Bel-Air, and Whittier. Tutors are expected to dedicate 90 minutes each week to one-on-one sessions with students, focusing on essential reading and writing skills. These sessions follow a curriculum that is both designed and supervised by teachers. For those with tighter schedules, there is an option to join a team of four tutors, which requires only a monthly commitment.

Beyond classroom instruction, Albuquerque Reads ensures that each participating child receives at least 20 books during the school year. This initiative aims to encourage continued practice of reading skills at home with family members.

To prepare volunteers adequately for their roles, a brief training session will be held later this summer. Interested individuals can find more information or express their interest by visiting abqreads.com or emailing [email protected].
