Melissa Martinez, an Associate Human Resources Generalist at the New Mexico General Services Department, has completed a specialized program from New Mexico State University. The program, known as New Mexico Edge, is designed for government HR professionals and provides practical skills applicable to real-world situations.
Martinez finished the six-month course on August 13, 2025, earning credits nearly equivalent to an associate’s degree. She will participate in the graduation ceremony scheduled for January 2026. Reflecting on her experience, Martinez said, "I liked how practical and applicable the program was. The instructors made the material easy to connect with real-world HR situations." She also appreciated networking with other professionals across New Mexico, which she found collaborative and supportive.
The knowledge gained from the program has bolstered Martinez's confidence in her role. "For me, the challenge was confidence; making sure I could take the knowledge and really use it," she said. Completing the course provided her with assurance and a renewed sense of preparedness to serve her department effectively.
Martinez expressed gratitude for the opportunity to enhance her skills and confidence as an HR professional. "The program gave me new knowledge and a boost in confidence as an HR professional," she added. Her goal is to apply what she learned to ensure employees feel supported while maintaining clear and fair policies.
