New Mexico launches NM Spirit initiative for America’s 250th anniversary celebration

New Mexico has launched an initiative called NM Spirit to commemorate the 250th anniversary of America's founding. This program, introduced by the New Mexico Semi-Quincentennial Commission, aims to highlight the state's unique history and culture. It offers funding, educational resources, and promotional support for local events and programs.

Debra Garcia y Griego, Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, said that "NM Spirit invites every New Mexican to take part in creating programs and events that reflect who we are, where we come from, and the future we aspire to build together."

The initiative provides financial assistance through the Elevate 1776 Sponsorship Program and educational materials via Discover Our Independence. The program encourages participation from schools, libraries, museums, cultural centers, community organizations, local businesses, tribal nations, arts groups, and social-service organizations.

Informational webinars are scheduled for December 12 and January 20 to help interested parties learn more about partnership opportunities. More details can be found on their website at newmexicospirit.org.

The New Mexico Semi-Quincentennial Commission was established in 2023 by Senate Bill 106 to plan the state's commemoration activities for this significant milestone in 2026.
