Deb Haaland, U.S. Secretary of the Interior and former U.S. Representative from New Mexico, shared a series of posts on her Twitter account in early December 2025 highlighting efforts to support food security, social assistance programs, and rural development in New Mexico.
On December 4, 2025, Haaland emphasized the cultural significance of communal meals and local agriculture in New Mexico, stating: "Food and sharing a meal with our families and neighbors is part of who we are. The Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Grant fosters our agricultural traditions while ensuring New Mexicans have more access to local, homegrown meals."
The following day, she reflected on her personal experience seeking government assistance through SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), writing: "It takes a lot to admit you need help. When I first applied for SNAP, I walked into the office and felt all eyes on me. Everyone knew why I was there. Thousands of hardworking New Mexicans had the courage to ask for help when they needed it. Our government has the responsibility" (December 5, 2025).
Later that same day, Haaland discussed opportunities for economic growth in rural areas during her visit to Eddy County: "The time I spent in Eddy County this year was full of conversations surrounding how New Mexicans will benefit from more opportunities in rural areas. From starting the trades in middle school and increasing housing that’s affordable, I’m confident we can build a state where every" (December 5, 2025).
Haaland's remarks reflect ongoing federal initiatives aimed at strengthening food systems infrastructure and expanding access to social services like SNAP. These efforts are part of broader policies designed to improve economic resilience and quality of life across both urban and rural communities in New Mexico.
