New Mexico MVD launches loaner program for mobile ID reader devices

The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) has introduced a new initiative to help businesses in the state transition to accepting Mobile IDs. The Mobile ID Reader Loaner Program allows businesses to temporarily borrow Tap2iD readers, which are age verification terminals, at no cost.

“New Mexico was at the forefront of states that adopted Mobile IDs. The public response has been excellent, and MVD is now ramping up resources that help businesses accept Mobile IDs,” said New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division Director Htet Wint. “Not only are Mobile IDs more convenient for many people, they’re also private and secure.”

These terminals use cryptography to confirm the age on a Mobile ID and ensure that the photo displayed matches the person presenting it. Businesses can set minimum age requirements through an online management portal called Verify with Credence, making it easier for establishments such as dispensaries or venues offering senior perks to use the system.

New Mexico began offering Mobile IDs in 2024 and is now one of 16 states with this option available. More information about participating states and TSA checkpoints where Mobile IDs are accepted can be found online.

A webinar providing further details about the program is also available for viewing.
