The New Mexico Department of Health has issued a warning regarding the use of ByHeart whole nutrition infant formula following its link to 15 cases of infant botulism across 12 states. The manufacturers have initiated a nationwide recall, removing the product from store shelves in New Mexico and beyond. Although no cases have been confirmed in New Mexico, health officials are urging caution.

Botulism is a serious illness that can lead to breathing difficulties, muscle paralysis, and potentially death. Dr. Chad Smelser, deputy state epidemiologist at the New Mexico Department of Health, emphasized the urgency of seeking medical attention if symptoms appear: "Once symptoms start, botulism can quickly become a medical emergency." Symptoms in infants may take weeks to manifest and include constipation, poor feeding, drooping eyelids, weak sucking, altered crying, lethargy, and difficulty breathing.

Parents who suspect their child might be affected should seek immediate medical care. For non-urgent inquiries, they can contact the NMDOH Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE (1-833-796-8773). More details about the outbreak are available on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

The New Mexico Department of Health aims to enhance health outcomes and provide services throughout the state. It collaborates with various Native American Tribes, Pueblos, and Nations while offering public health services across all counties.
