Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández calls out Senate payout provision tied to January 6

Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández has publicly criticized a provision she says would grant large payouts to Senators for their roles on January 6, urging immediate action through her proposed amendment. The series of posts appeared on November 12, 2025, on her official social media account.

In her first post at 02:02 UTC, Leger Fernández stated: "If they want to fix this, they should vote for my amendment in a few minutes. Pretty straightforward.

It’s outrageous that Senators snuck in a provision that would pay themselves MILLIONS for their role in January 6 while refusing to help families afford life-saving health care."

Shortly after, at 02:03 UTC, she reiterated her call for legislative action: "I have an amendment to fix this.

They can vote for it in a couple of minutes and put their votes where their mouth is."

Later that morning at 02:30 UTC, the Representative described the immediacy with which her proposal could be adopted: "And we can fix it right now in the House Rules Committee with a single line of text.

I have an amendment that can be passed right now to get rid of these payouts… Let’s see if Republicans vote for it."

Leger Fernández represents New Mexico's third congressional district. She has won several recent elections; most recently in 2024 against Sharon Clahchischilliage and previously against Alexis Martinez Johnson in both the 2022 and 2020 general elections.
