New Mexico residents who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) have received their full November benefits, according to a statement from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. The state distributed the funds to eligible recipients' EBT cards after receiving guidance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and before a U.S. Supreme Court decision lifted a lower court order that had required the federal government to release the benefits.
“Yesterday, after receiving guidance from the USDA, New Mexico sent full November SNAP benefits to all eligible New Mexicans,” Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said. “We won’t stand by while the President works to deny food to hungry children, families and seniors.”
The state acted in response to an initial federal court order in Rhode Island and subsequent USDA instructions. As a result, families will receive their full November SNAP benefit either on their regular issuance date or on November 8 if their benefit is typically issued between November 1 and 8. Recipients can use these funds as usual via their EBT cards and are encouraged to check balances using the ebtEDGEmobile.com app.
Eligible residents are advised to continue applying for assistance through YES.NM.GOV, by phone at 1-800-283-4465, or at any Human Services Department Income Support Division office.
About 460,000 people in New Mexico depend on SNAP each month for food support. The program also contributes significantly to local economies; for every dollar spent through SNAP, up to $1.80 in economic activity is generated.
Nationally, SNAP was created under the Food Stamp Act of 1964 and serves around 42 million Americans annually.
A second special legislative session will begin Monday as state officials prepare for possible continued disruptions caused by an ongoing federal government shutdown attributed by state leaders to Congressional Republicans.
“We cannot leave New Mexicans at the mercy of federal dysfunction,” Lujan Grisham said. “This special session will give us the tools to feed families if Republicans in Congress fail them again. We’re not waiting around to find out.”
During this period, Lieutenant Governor Howie Morales will serve as acting governor while Governor Lujan Grisham attends the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Brazil. The Legislature is scheduled to convene at noon on Monday, November 10 at the State Capitol in Santa Fe.
