House Republican leader criticizes senators over special session on government shutdown

House Republican Leader Gail Armstrong has voiced her concerns over the Governor's decision to call a special session in response to the ongoing federal government shutdown. Armstrong criticized Senators Luján and Heinrich for their refusal to fund SNAP benefits, which she says are crucial for New Mexico's most vulnerable residents.

"We are being called into another special session because Senators Luján and Heinrich are refusing to fund SNAP benefits for the neediest New Mexicans," Armstrong said. She expressed her preference for the Governor to use her influence to encourage the Senate delegation to vote for reopening the federal government, rather than engaging in what she describes as political maneuvering. "The people of this state deserve more than the costly and dangerous political games Senators Luján and Heinrich continue to play."

Armstrong, a Republican elected in 2017, represents New Mexico's 49th House district. She succeeded Don Tripp in this role.
