Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico has announced a second Special Legislative Session for November 10, 2025. The session aims to address the impacts of the federal government shutdown, which has resulted from Democrats in the U.S. Senate not voting to reopen it. State lawmakers will be tasked with allocating additional state funds to maintain the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which supports about 460,000 residents, or 21% of New Mexico's population.
Senate Republican Leader Bill Sharer criticized Senators Ben Ray Luján and Martin Heinrich for their role in the shutdown. "Ben Ray Luján and Martin Heinrich have made it crystal clear: They don’t care about you," Sharer said. He accused them of prioritizing party politics over their constituents' needs, saying they have turned New Mexicans into political pawns.
Sharer also highlighted the importance of New Mexico's oil and gas industries, noting that without their revenue, the state would struggle to cover the funding gap left by the federal government's closure. He urged voters to remember these events during elections.
The special session reflects ongoing tensions between state and federal lawmakers over government operations and funding priorities.
