Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, who leads the state of New Mexico, used her social media platform in late October 2025 to address a range of issues including federal nutrition assistance, local elections, and holiday safety.
On October 30, 2025, Governor Lujan Grisham expressed concern about the potential impact of a federal government shutdown on food assistance programs. She stated, "Letting families go hungry is a moral failure. That’s why I joined 21 Democratic governors demanding the White House protect SNAP funding during this reckless federal shutdown. #SNAP feeds 42 million Americans, including 460,000 New Mexicans. Cutting it off before Thanksgiving".
The following day, on October 31, she marked Halloween with a message to her constituents: "Times are tough, but politics shouldn’t be scary — unless I’m jumping out from behind a door. Wishing all New Mexicans a safe and spooky #Halloween! ".
Later that same day, Governor Lujan Grisham highlighted the importance of civic participation after voting early in Santa Fe alongside Manny. She posted on social media: "It’s been a challenging week, but Manny and I still managed to vote early in the Santa Fe Election today. Every election shapes our communities, from local schools and roads to healthcare and economic opportunities. New Mexico faces unique challenges and incredible".
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) provides food-purchasing assistance for low- and no-income people living in the United States. During periods of federal government shutdowns or budget impasses, there have been concerns about disruptions to SNAP benefits which could affect millions of recipients across the country—including hundreds of thousands in New Mexico—especially around major holidays like Thanksgiving when demand for food support can be particularly acute.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has previously advocated for policies aimed at supporting vulnerable populations within her state and has participated in efforts with other Democratic governors to call for continued federal support during times of fiscal uncertainty.
