The New Mexico History Museum has chosen artist Molly Mendenhall to create a mural celebrating the centennial of Route 66. Her artwork will be displayed in the museum's lobby from January 2026 to January 2027. Mendenhall was selected from five finalists after an open call for artists earlier this year, which attracted 190 submissions nationwide.

Mendenhall's design was praised for its narrative quality, capturing the essence of Route 66 as a historic symbol of mobility and adventure. "I’m thrilled to be painting a mural for the History Museum in celebration of the Centennial of Route 66," Mendenhall said. She highlighted how communities along the route have developed vibrant city centers with rich histories supporting the arts.

Her mural will feature a blend of historical imagery and contemporary elements, transitioning from a sepia-toned 1930s scene to a modern view of Albuquerque. Keri Schroeder, curator and project lead, expressed enthusiasm about Mendenhall's involvement: "We are delighted to have Molly working on this project."

Mendenhall will start her work in November, allowing visitors to observe her progress during regular museum hours. Additionally, an exhibition at the Governor’s Gallery in January 2026 will showcase works by all five mural finalists.

The New Mexico History Museum is part of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and is located on Santa Fe Plaza's north side. More information can be found at nmhistory.org.
