The New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs and the Museum of New Mexico Press have announced the opening of submissions for the 3rd Annual New Mexico Ekphrastic Poetry Contest. This year's theme, "One Land, Many Stories," invites participants to create poetry inspired by a selection of artworks that reflect New Mexico's past, present, and future.
Debra Garcia y Griego, Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, said, "Our department is proud to once again showcase a wide variety of art from our museums and historic sites to inspire New Mexicans." The artworks were chosen in preparation for National Poetry Month in April and highlight New Mexico's unique contributions as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary.
Erin Adair-Hodges, Director of the Museum of New Mexico Press, noted that the contest serves as a reminder of "the powerful stories on view throughout the Department of Cultural Affairs," encouraging residents to share their own narratives through poetry. The selected pieces include a photograph from the 1894 World’s Fair and an artistic depiction from 250 million years ago.
The contest will accept entries until February 27, 2026. In January, a free poetry workshop will be hosted by the National Hispanic Cultural Center to help participants refine their submissions. Entries can be submitted via nmculture.org/poetry in three categories: Kid (ages 9 and younger), Youth (ages 10-18), and Adult (ages 19 and older). Winners will receive CulturePasses and an opportunity to present their work at a special reading event in Spring 2026.
