Lebanon and Beyond, a new garden at ABQ BioPark, is now open to the public. This garden showcases the cultural and ecological links between the Mediterranean region and the American Southwest by blending Lebanese and New Mexican landscapes.
The project received significant funding from Robert and Monika Ghattas, who have been part of Albuquerque's community for over 70 years, along with support from the New Mexico BioPark Society (NMBPS). The garden aligns with ABQ BioPark's mission to connect people with nature and celebrate diverse ecosystems.
Julie Miller Rugg, Executive Director of NMBPS, said, "The Ghattas family’s generosity, combined with the support of our members and donors, has made Lebanon and Beyond possible." She added that the garden exemplifies how philanthropy can create spaces that connect people with nature while celebrating cultural heritage.
Visitors to Lebanon and Beyond will encounter Mediterranean plants such as fig trees and Lebanon cedars alongside New Mexican flora like Yucca rostrata. The garden also features Lebanese-inspired architecture integrated with desert landscapes. It includes sensory areas designed for education, small events, and reflection.
