The University of New Mexico Board of Regents has started a national search for the institution’s next president. The announcement was made as current President Garnett Stokes is set to finish her term on July 1, 2026.

“This search represents an important moment in UNM’s history—an opportunity to find a leader who will build on the incredible momentum already underway,” said Board of Regents Chair Paul Blanchard. “We are searching for a leader who brings integrity, vision, and the ability to turn ideas into action—someone who will position UNM to make an even greater impact in New Mexico and beyond.”

The Board plans to appoint an advisory search committee that will help identify qualified candidates for the role. Once established, this committee will direct the national search process.

Isaacson Miller, a search firm with experience from previous presidential searches at UNM, has been contracted by the Board to assist in finding suitable candidates.

Members of the university community are invited to contribute their perspectives on key leadership qualities through comments at presidentialsearch.unm.edu. Updates about the search process will also be available there.

The selected committee and Isaacson Miller will conduct a thorough nationwide recruitment effort. This includes organizing public forums and candidate visits before making recommendations to the Board of Regents. The goal is to name a new president by late spring 2026, with the incoming leader beginning their tenure in July 2026.
