The New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship has been recognized with the National Impact Award by College Promise, a nonprofit organization that advocates for greater access to college education. The award was presented during the College Promise Careers Institute’s 10th Anniversary Celebration at Palo Alto College in San Antonio, Texas, on October 20, 2025.

“This recognition reflects tens of thousands of New Mexicans whose lives have been transformed by the Opportunity Scholarship,” said Higher Education Secretary Stephanie M. Rodriguez. “Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has been clear: there is no wrong door to higher education in New Mexico. This administration is making that promise a reality.”

The Opportunity Scholarship pays full tuition for students at all 29 public colleges and universities in New Mexico. It is available to both part-time and full-time students who are pursuing certificates, associate degrees, or bachelor’s degrees in high-demand fields. The program also allows summer enrollment and does not have income requirements, making it one of the most inclusive free-tuition initiatives nationwide.

According to the New Mexico Higher Education Department, more than 41,000 students are currently benefiting from the scholarship. Data shows that college enrollment in the state increased by 4.2% over two consecutive years as of the spring semester of 2025.

As part of its tenth anniversary, College Promise will highlight the Opportunity Scholarship for its role in expanding educational opportunities.
