Gene Grant has been appointed as the new executive director of the New Mexico Office of African American Affairs, according to an announcement from Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. Grant is known for his work as the former host of “New Mexico In Focus” on PBS, where he led statewide public affairs discussions and produced programs highlighting African American issues.
Governor Lujan Grisham said, “For almost 20 years, Gene Grant has been one of New Mexico’s most trusted voices – asking tough questions, bringing people together and making sure every New Mexican has a seat at the table. He understands the power of representation, and he’s spent his career making sure African American voices and stories are front and center in our state.”
Grant hosted “New Mexico in Focus” on New Mexico PBS from 2005 to 2023. During this time, he moderated public affairs programming and produced recurring specials on topics relevant to African Americans in New Mexico. Most recently, Grant worked as chief program and policy officer at Animal Protection New Mexico. His experience includes legislative advocacy, coalition building, and foundation development.
In his new role as director of the Office of African American Affairs, Grant will be responsible for promoting economic development, education, health, and political well-being among African American communities across the state.
“I am deeply honored to serve the African American community and all New Mexicans in this capacity,” said Grant. “I look forward to working with community leaders, legislators and stakeholders across New Mexico to strengthen our cultural institutions, advance equity and create opportunities for all African Americans to thrive in our state.”
Outside his professional roles, Grant is also recognized as a playwright, cultural critic, columnist, and board member for several organizations including the ACLU of New Mexico, Vortex Theatre, and Duke City Shootout. He lives in Santa Fe.
