ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The New Mexico Department of Public Safety (DPS) consists of several divisions and units, including the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy. The academy is guided by core values such as character, competence, compassion, commitment, and comprehensive teamwork.

The Law Enforcement Academy offers basic and advanced training for cadets, officers, and telecommunicators, including dispatchers. Contrary to a common misconception, the academy does not serve only the New Mexico State Police. Instead, it provides training for all law enforcement agencies throughout the state.

The academy was created to deliver a structured program of basic and in-service law enforcement training, including seminars and instructional sessions. Its mission is to continually update its programs to meet the evolving needs of law enforcement. The academy is staffed by 19 full-time employees dedicated to carrying out this mission.

"Character – Integrity. Your word is your bond – keep your word."

"Competence – Know your job and do it well."

"Compassion – Treat people with humility, dignity, and respect."

"Commitment – Mission accomplishment through intrinsic discipline, motivation, and focus."

"Comprehensive Teamwork – Achieve success through cohesive empowerment and trust."
