New Mexico offers $70 million in grants for electric grid modernization

The New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD) has announced the availability of $70 million in grants aimed at modernizing the state's electric grid. The funding is part of the Community Benefits Fund established by the State Legislature during its 2025 session. This initiative is managed by EMNRD's Energy Conservation and Management Division (ECAM).

Rebecca "Puck" Stair, Director of ECAM, emphasized the significance of this funding: "This Grid Modernization Grant Fund infusion is a game-changer for New Mexico’s ability to find innovative ways of strengthening our electric grid and building long-term resilience for our communities." She noted that while federal support for energy infrastructure projects is decreasing, New Mexico is providing substantial state funding for grid modernization.

The grant program targets public entities such as municipalities, county governments, state agencies, public schools, universities, and Native American tribes within New Mexico. Eligible projects should focus on upgrading electric distribution or transmission infrastructure to integrate renewable energy sources or enhance grid efficiency and reliability.

Three types of projects are eligible for funding: those involving construction and operation of modern grid technology; pre-construction or design activities leading to such installations; and original research on grid function and integration of renewable resources.

Applications will be accepted starting November 1, 2025, on a rolling monthly basis until funds are exhausted. Detailed information about the grant program can be found at https://www.emnrd.nm.gov/ecmd/about-us/requests-for-proposals-applications.
