New Mexico Senate shows bipartisan cooperation during special legislative session

The New Mexico State Senate recently showcased bipartisan cooperation during a special session aimed at addressing the challenges arising from federal funding cuts. The session, convened by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on October 1st, was focused on securing state funding to ensure food security, affordable healthcare, and access to care for thousands of families affected by the budget reconciliation bill in Washington.

Lieutenant Governor Howie Morales, who presides over the Senate proceedings, expressed pride in the bipartisan efforts. "I am proud of the Senate," he said, emphasizing the civility and adherence to decorum that allowed for productive outcomes. He noted that senators from different parties and regions rose above partisan differences to serve their constituents effectively.

During the two-day session, lawmakers tackled various issues without descending into acrimony. Morales highlighted that mutual respect was evident throughout the discussions. "Better than I have ever seen in my seven years presiding," he remarked about the atmosphere of cooperation.

The session also addressed political violence concerns but maintained focus on legislative duties. The results included emergency support for food and health services, financial aid for rural care, and expanded health insurance access.

Morales emphasized that focusing on results rather than partisanship is key to serving New Mexicans best. He hopes this example of collaboration can inspire other statehouses facing similar partisan gridlock.
