ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Marshall Martinez - Executive Director | Equality New Mexico

Equality New Mexico (EQNM), an advocacy and public education organization for LGBTQ people in the state, is hiring a temporary part-time Community Engagement Strategist. The position is aimed at supporting community organizing and power-building efforts to further the organization’s mission.

The role pays $18.50 per hour or more, depending on experience, and involves up to 20 hours of work per week over a 26-week period. There is potential for the position to be extended or expanded if funding allows. The strategist will report directly to EQNM’s Director of Policy and People.

The main objectives for this entry-level job include learning and practicing organizing skills, building relationships with LGBTQ individuals across New Mexico, and recruiting as well as training queer and trans New Mexicans to participate in EQNM’s policy, culture, and systems change initiatives.

Key responsibilities involve recruiting volunteers for activities such as electoral participation, civic engagement, community education, and legislative advocacy events. Outreach will be conducted through various channels including phone calls, text messages, social media platforms managed by EQNM, and emails. The strategist will also represent the organization at in-person events by engaging with community members.

Additional duties include training volunteers both in person and virtually throughout the state; maintaining volunteer information within EQNM’s database; communicating organizational priorities; collaborating with team members on goal-setting; reporting progress to supervisors; organizing story collection efforts; encouraging community action; providing public speaking training for advocacy purposes; traveling statewide as needed; and performing other tasks assigned by the Chief Liberation Officer.

Applicants are expected to have strong communication skills, reliable internet access, familiarity with Google Suite programs, flexibility regarding work hours (including evenings and weekends), willingness to travel within New Mexico using their own transportation means, ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines, and readiness to learn new technical or organizational systems quickly.

EQNM emphasizes its commitment to justice by prioritizing outreach toward Black, Indigenous, and people of color within the LGBTQ community—especially those most affected by harmful policies. The organization focuses on issues such as reproductive rights and gender-affirming care access, worker protections including fair pay practices and time off policies, as well as racial justice concerns related to systemic biases in criminal justice.

“EQNM is proud to be an advocacy organization that speaks not on behalf of, but in unison with, LGBTQ people across New Mexico. We seek opportunities to align with people and systems of power to create a state where all of us thrive — and we don’t shy away from engaging authentically with institutions when their decisions harm our communities.”

The group encourages applications from people of color, women, transgender individuals, those from various backgrounds or experience levels—even if they lack traditional higher education credentials or prior job experience—stating: “If you think you have an interest in this work, please apply and allow us to interview you to identify transferable skills that you may have.”

Interested candidates can apply through a Google Form or email marshall@eqnm.org with responses corresponding to application questions.
