Bernalillo County is encouraging residents and visitors to explore its open spaces during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. With concerns about a possible federal government shutdown that could impact access to national parks, the county is highlighting alternative locations for outdoor recreation and cultural experiences.
The county manages over 1,200 acres across 17 properties. These open spaces include scenic trails, restored farmlands, historic sites, and desert areas. They are accessible to both locals and tourists for activities such as hiking, biking, birdwatching, picnicking, and learning about the area's natural and historical heritage.
One notable location is Gutierrez-Hubbell Open Space in the South Valley. It features a historic Camino Real trading post and museum, adobe structures, a cultural center, farm fields, and river trails. Other highlighted sites include Bachechi Open Space in the North Valley with its trails, gardens, and educational programs; and Carlito Springs Open Space east of Albuquerque with natural springs and orchards.
These spaces were developed for community enjoyment and aim to preserve both New Mexico’s history and its natural environment. The county recommends that visitors review property guidelines on their official website at bernco.gov/open-space, bring water, and follow “leave-no-trace” principles.
