The City of Las Cruces is set to update its Downtown Master Plan, which has been a key framework for the development of the city's central district since its initial adoption in the early 2000s and last revision in 2016. The new update aims to refine existing strategies by considering recent changes, successful elements, and remaining opportunities.
From October 20 to 24, the city will conduct a public planning workshop with PlaceMakers, a planning consultant. This event will involve residents, business owners, civic organizations, and city staff in focused meetings and design sessions. Chris Faivre, Community Development Director, emphasized that the update is about "fine-tuning what we’ve already achieved" to ensure downtown reflects Las Cruces' needs and character.
Throughout the week-long workshop, various stakeholder groups will be consulted to gather insights on current conditions and future priorities. Three public meetings at Amador Live on South Main Street will allow residents to engage with the process, share ideas, and observe how their feedback influences the plan.
The schedule includes an opening presentation on October 20 from 6–7:30 p.m., highlighting changes since 2016 and inviting public input. An open house on October 22 from 10–11 a.m. offers community members a chance to view draft concepts and interact with planners. The week concludes with a closing presentation on October 24 from 6–7:30 p.m., summarizing findings and next steps for the Downtown Master Plan Update.
The Downtown Master Plan acts as a blueprint for investment and vitality in Las Cruces' heart. It guides decisions on land use, design, mobility, and economic development to maintain downtown as a vibrant destination for all. The upcoming update will focus on potential catalyst projects and strengthening neighborhood connections while integrating lessons learned since the last update.
