State Rep. Block: Gov. Grisham's special session 'is a waste of time and money'

John Block, a state representative for New Mexico, has called on the governor to cancel an upcoming special session, citing concerns over wasted time and taxpayer resources. Block made his statement on the social media platform X.

"Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham: Your special session is a waste of time and money," said JOHN BLOCK, New Mexico State Representative for 51st District (R). "CANCEL IT AND SAVE FACE — AFTER ALL, YOU STILL HAVE YOUR PRIDE! This non-serious special session will be the final nail in the coffin of what's left of your already irreparably ruined reputation."

According to Block, the debate surrounding the special session questions its ability to address New Mexico's immediate challenges effectively. He argues that convening lawmakers at this time is merely performative and fiscally irresponsible. Block urges the governor to focus instead on durable policy solutions during regular sessions. His message is directed at taxpayers and independents, presenting Republicans as prudent guardians of governance who prioritize measurable outcomes over what he describes as political theater. He concludes by stating that the session would further damage the governor’s credibility and should be canceled.

Under New Mexico’s constitution, only the governor can call a special session through a proclamation and set its agenda. The Legislature is generally limited to addressing those specified subjects. Special sessions differ from 30-day and 60-day regular sessions and are typically reserved for targeted issues such as appropriations adjustments, emergency relief, or time-sensitive policies. All legislative activities during these sessions are recorded publicly, allowing citizens to track proposals from introduction to final passage and signature or veto.

The Legislative Finance Committee (LFC) of New Mexico provides nonpartisan fiscal analysis for proposed legislation through Fiscal Impact Reports (FIRs). These reports outline costs, revenue effects, and policy tradeoffs, helping lawmakers assess whether short-term fixes are sustainable and how measures interact with federal funds while considering risks to reserves. The LFC also issues budget recommendations and program evaluations, offering public insight into spending priorities and performance metrics that inform debates about convening or expanding a session’s agenda.

Block represents District 51 in Otero County within the New Mexico House of Representatives. As a Republican, he frequently communicates with constituents on issues such as education, public safety, and fiscal stewardship. Known for providing real-time updates from the Roundhouse, Block emphasizes limited government, accountability, and taxpayer protection. He positions himself as an advocate for transparent budgeting and respectful debate. His official page offers contact information, committee assignments, sponsored bills, and voting records for residents to monitor his work.
