Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Mayor Eric Enriquez attended the opening of Pedrena Senior Living Apartments in Las Cruces on September 30. The new housing project aims to address the city's shortage of affordable senior housing by providing 80 residential units specifically designed for older adults.

According to HUD's 2024 data, approximately 20% of homeless individuals are aged 55 and older, with nearly half lacking shelter. This trend is attributed to fixed incomes, rising housing costs, and a lack of suitable housing options for seniors.

The newly opened complex offers one- and two-bedroom apartments equipped with amenities such as a common area meeting space, fitness room, business center, dog park, solarium, library, and security features. Each unit includes modern appliances and storage solutions.

The $26.5 million development was supported by various organizations including the NM Department of Finance and Administration, Department of Workforce Solutions – Office of Housing, City of Las Cruces, Housing New Mexico, Doña Ana County bond issuance, CREA, Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust, Erstad Architects, Crestline Building Corporation, Tierra West, Monarch Properties Inc., among others.

Sarita Nair from the NM Department of Workforce Solutions highlighted the importance of such projects: "By 2030, New Mexico is projected to be the state with fourth highest percentage of people over age 65 in the nation..."

Mayor Enriquez emphasized collaboration: "It takes a team... We are proud of this project and the impact it will make to improve quality of life for seniors in our community."

Tom Mannschreck from Thomas Development Co. noted high demand: "Even before our scheduled completion on August 30... Today, 70 of the 80 units are already occupied..."

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by Las Cruces and New Mexico to enhance affordable housing access for seniors.
