UNM Hospital opens new Critical Care Tower for adult emergency care

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The University of New Mexico Hospital will open its new Critical Care Tower to patients on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at 5 a.m. This change will affect where adult patients seeking emergency care are directed.

UNM Hospital is the only Level I Trauma Center in New Mexico and treats patients arriving by helicopter, ambulance, or personal vehicle. The hospital has coordinated with local EMS partners such as fire departments, ambulance services, and air transport teams to ensure a smooth transition for patient arrivals.

Starting at 5 a.m. on October 5, adults needing emergency care should be dropped off at the new Adult Emergency Department entrance located on Yale Blvd. near Lomas. Those parking in the garage can take any elevator to the second floor and cross the skybridge into the Critical Care Tower before taking an elevator down to B-Level to reach the Adult Emergency Department.

The Pediatric Emergency Department will remain in its current location in the Pavilion building. The pediatric emergency drop-off is at Lomas and Stanford Dr., and those walking from the parking garage should use elevators and skybridges connecting through the Critical Care Tower into the Pavilion before proceeding to the first floor for pediatric emergency services.

A downloadable map is available for visitors needing directions.
