U.S. Representative Teresa Leger Fernández has raised concerns about the impact of the ongoing government shutdown on healthcare access and affordability, according to a series of posts on her official social media account.
On October 3, 2025, Leger Fernández described the potential consequences for community clinics, stating that "Clinics like La Familia may have to turn away families they’ve cared for across generations. Patients could wait months for urgent appointments, leaving conditions untreated. Many will be forced to choose between groceries and medical care. This is the reality they’re bracing for" (posted October 3, 2025).
Later that day, she addressed her followers directly regarding rising healthcare costs and Medicaid coverage, writing: "I’m asking each of you, do you know a family member, a friend, or someone who’s gotten notice of increased health care premiums or who might lose Medicaid coverage? If you do, then you know the truth and you know who to trust.
You know what Democrats are fighting for in this" (posted October 3, 2025).
In an update on the third day of the shutdown, Leger Fernández criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson's decision to cancel upcoming votes: "DAY 3 SHUTDOWN UPDATE:
Speaker Johnson just cancelled next week’s votes instead of working to end this shutdown.
Is it because they don’t want to lower Americans’ healthcare costs or because they don’t want to release the Epstein Files?" (posted October 3, 2025).
Leger Fernández has represented New Mexico in Congress since first winning election in 2020. She was re-elected in subsequent general elections—defeating Alexis Martinez Johnson in both 2020 and 2022 with over 58% of the vote each time—and most recently won against Sharon Clahchischilliage in 2024.
