Marshall Martinez - Executive Director | Equality New Mexico

Marshall Martinez, Executive Director of Equality New Mexico (EQNM), has returned to his role after a 100-day sabbatical. The leave was part of EQNM’s policy that allows staff members with five years of service to take a 90-day break, intended to promote rest and sustainability within the organization.

“The time I took this summer is something for which I will forever be grateful,” said Martinez. He noted that while he had the privilege to rest, many in the communities EQNM serves do not have such opportunities due to ongoing challenges and attacks on their rights.

Martinez shared highlights from his time off, including travel to New York City where he attended performances such as Orville Peck in Cabaret and Audra McDonald in Gypsy. He also visited other cities like San Antonio, Madison, Chicago, and spent some time in Palm Springs.

“It was emotional and inspiring to remember that we can all find a way to be part of the movement even when we want to focus on our own joy as well,” Martinez reflected about his experiences during the sabbatical.

He emphasized that rest allowed him space for reflection and personal care. “Did you know that people over 40 who take two 30-minute naps a week reduce their risk of heart attack? I plan to keep those naps going.”

While away, EQNM’s team conducted a leadership retreat focused on organizational structure and long-term vision. Martinez credited Nathan Saavedra and Rudy Montoya for leading the organization through what turned out to be an eventful summer.

Martinez acknowledged ongoing challenges facing LGBTQ communities. “I am coming back more committed than ever to distributing power, to building an LGBTQ movement in New Mexico that doesn’t leave anyone behind.” His priorities include advocating for incarcerated or unhoused queer and trans individuals, defending quality healthcare, protecting HIV prevention systems, promoting inclusive education in New Mexico schools, advancing data privacy legislation for vulnerable communities, and supporting trans community members facing increasing attacks.

He concluded by expressing renewed commitment: “I am back, fully in it, and ready to fight for us. Thank you for the break, and in the words of my favorite TV president, Jed Bartlett: ‘What’s next?’”
