Albuquerque Reads begins new school year and seeks volunteer tutors

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

More than 100 tutors have started the new program year for Albuquerque Reads, a classroom-based tutoring initiative operating at three Albuquerque Public Schools. The program focuses on supporting kindergarten and first-grade students who are struggling with literacy.

Albuquerque Reads offers personalized, one-on-one tutoring sessions lasting 90 minutes each week from mid-September through May. The program operates at Whittier, Atrisco, and Bel-Air elementary schools. Each student in the program receives up to 20 books for their home library and access to online reading resources.

The Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce is actively seeking more volunteers to serve as tutors for the current school year, particularly at Atrisco and Whittier elementary schools. Volunteers can commit to 90 minutes per week or join as part of a team that rotates monthly responsibilities.

“Join Albuquerque Public Schools, the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and volunteers like you to make a lasting difference in a child’s life!” the Chamber stated.

Those interested in volunteering or sponsoring can find more information at abqreads.com or by contacting Kayla Nelson via email.
