The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) has started a study to address congestion and safety issues at the I-25/I-40 interchange, commonly called the “Big I,” in Albuquerque. This interchange is one of the busiest in the state, serving hundreds of thousands of drivers every day.
The study will focus on evaluating operational and safety problems at key points, including the I-40 approach segments to both westbound-to-northbound and eastbound-to-northbound ramps, as well as the I-25 northbound mainline from the Big I to the Comanche Road off-ramp. The goal is to identify improvements that can reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.
“We know how critical the Big I is to daily travel in Albuquerque,” said NMDOT Cabinet Secretary Ricky Serna. “This study is the first step in finding effective solutions that keep people moving safely and efficiently.”
NMDOT is asking for public input through an online survey available on their project website. More information about the study and opportunities for participation can be found at https://www.dot.nm.gov/projects/big-i-operations-study/.
