Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández, U.S. Representative for New Mexico’s 3rd congressional district, used her social media platform on September 17, 2025, to promote awareness of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) and highlight concerns about housing affordability.

In a post at 14:40 UTC, Leger Fernández addressed those potentially affected by nuclear testing and uranium mining in New Mexico, stating: "HAPPENING TODAY Did you or a loved one live near the Trinity test site, downwind of nuclear testing, or work in New Mexico’s uranium mines or mills? You may be eligible for compensation under the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA). Join me and RECA experts for a https://t.co/Gq2XjkCf81".

Later that day at 17:55 UTC, she announced an online event aimed at helping constituents learn more about RECA eligibility: "TODAY: We’re hosting a RECA Tele-Workshop. Go to https://t.co/WxWoK55ie8 to sign up. We’ll give you a call! https://t.co/cvxybz87Mb".

In another post at 19:47 UTC on the same day, Leger Fernández shifted focus to economic challenges facing Americans. She wrote: "“Make life affordable again.” Meanwhile: searches for “help with mortgage” just passed the levels of the most infamous financial crisis of the 21st century."

Leger Fernández has been active in public service and recently secured electoral victories in her district. In 2024, she won against Sharon Clahchischilliage with 41.8% of the vote compared to her opponent's 43.7%. Previously, she defeated Alexis Martinez Johnson in both the 2022 and 2020 general elections with over 58% of the vote each time.

The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act provides compensation for individuals exposed to radiation as a result of nuclear weapons testing and uranium industry employment—a longstanding issue in New Mexico due to its history with atomic research and mining activities.
