Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández, a U.S. Representative from New Mexico, used her social media platform on September 16 and 17, 2025, to criticize recent Republican actions in Congress related to tariffs, healthcare funding, and Affordable Care Act (ACA) premiums.
On September 16, Leger Fernández commented on the continuation of tariffs implemented during former President Donald Trump's administration. She stated, "Republicans JUST voted to keep Trump's tariffs. The same ones driving inflation through the roof and forcing Americans to pay more for everything. Why? Because they won’t stand up to Trump."
Later that day, she addressed proposed cuts to healthcare spending by Republicans. In her post, she wrote, "I call BS. You and your buddies cut healthcare by $1 trillion dollars. That’s like taking away someone's oxygen tank and offering them an inhaler."
On September 17, Leger Fernández turned her attention to ACA premiums under a new Republican-backed short-term funding bill. She stated that millions could face higher costs as a result of the proposal: "Millions across the country are facing higher ACA premiums under the proposed Republican short term funding bill. Republicans on the Rules Committee had the chance to stop it today by accepting commonsense amendments — but they refused. Instead, they chose to play partisan".
Leger Fernández has held her congressional seat since 2020 after defeating Alexis Martinez Johnson in that year's general election with 58.7% of the vote compared to Johnson's 41.3%. She was re-elected in both 2022 and 2024, winning against Martinez Johnson again in 2022 with a similar margin and defeating Sharon Clahchischilliage in 2024 despite a closer race.
