Gail Armstrong, House Minority Leader of the New Mexico Legislature, issued a statement addressing the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Armstrong described the incident as a tragic consequence of escalating political rhetoric and called on Americans across the political spectrum to reject violence and restore civility.

"I am outraged and heartbroken to learn that Charlie Kirk has been killed in an act of political violence," said Gail 'Missy' Armstrong, State Rep. District 49. "This horrific attack is a tragic reminder that words matter. There is no justification, ever, for political violence. We must do better because our future depends on it."

The statement follows the assassination of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, who was fatally shot during a public appearance in Scottsdale, Arizona, on September 10, 2025. Authorities have confirmed that the attack was politically motivated. The Associated Press reported that the gunman was apprehended at the scene and is currently in custody pending federal charges.

Political violence in the United States has been increasing in recent years. A 2024 report by the University of California, Davis found that 20% of Americans believe political violence is sometimes justified, up from 9% in 2017. The study warned that normalization of hostile rhetoric from political figures could exacerbate tensions and lead to more violent incidents.

According to the FBI’s 2024 report on domestic terrorism, politically motivated violence accounted for over 70% of domestic terror incidents investigated during that year. The report highlighted a concerning trend of lone actors radicalized online and influenced by political ideologies. The FBI warned that the coming election cycle could see a rise in such incidents unless mitigating steps are taken across government and civil society.

Armstrong has served as a Republican member of the New Mexico House of Representatives since 2017 and currently holds the role of House Minority Leader. Known for her advocacy on rural economic development and conservative values, she has played a key role in her party’s legislative strategy in the state.
