On September 18, 2025, the cremated remains of 38 unclaimed military veterans will be laid to rest with full military honors during the annual Forgotten Heroes Burial Ceremony. The event will start at 9 a.m. at Legacy Church in Albuquerque and conclude at Santa Fe National Cemetery by 11 a.m.
The ceremony is organized by the New Mexico Department of Veterans' Services in collaboration with several local entities including Bernalillo County, the New Mexico National Guard, and local law enforcement agencies. The program aims to ensure that honorably discharged veterans who pass away without family or friends receive a dignified burial.
"The public is invited to attend and serve as 'family' to provide a final salute for these fallen Veterans who have served our country," said an official involved in the program. This initiative highlights that respect for military service endures beyond life.
Following the initial service at Legacy Church, located at 4701 Wyoming Blvd NE, Albuquerque, urns will be escorted by law enforcement and service agencies to their final resting place at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
