The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) will oversee a tritium venting operation at Los Alamos National Laboratory this weekend. The procedure involves the controlled release and capture of tritium from four flanged containers. This operation is regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and executed by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

NMED staff will be present on-site to ensure compliance with safety protocols and provide updates through social media. Ted Wyka from NNSA said that guidance for residents, including steps to take during venting, advice for vulnerable groups such as nearby farmers, and procedures for public notification in case of incidents, will be issued today.

For inquiries, contact information has been provided: Ted Wyka at NNSA, Michael Feldman at EPA Region 6, George P. Brozowski also at EPA Region 6, and Robert Gallegos at NNSA's Los Alamos Field Office.

The New Mexico Environment Department recently confirmed that Las Vegas drinking water remains safe despite concerns about post-fire runoff from the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fire affecting the water supply. More details can be found on their website: New Mexico Environment Department.
