New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez has criticized a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that permits federal agents to continue stopping and detaining individuals based on race, ethnicity, language, or type of work. The decision came as a result of an appeal by the Trump Administration against a lower court ruling in a case involving U.S. citizens detained by ICE agents in Los Angeles.

Although the Supreme Court's 6-3 decision did not directly address the racial profiling claims made by plaintiffs in California, it is anticipated to influence ICE operations across the country. Torrez expressed his concerns about the implications for New Mexico, which has the highest proportion of Latinos in the United States.

"This decision, which effectively allows federal agents to continue to stop and detain people because of their skin color, the language they speak, and the work that they do, is a grave insult to the people of New Mexico," said Torrez. He emphasized that many Latinos in New Mexico are American citizens with deep roots in the state.

Torrez reassured residents that New Mexico's Constitution protects them from racial profiling by local law enforcement agencies. He also reminded officers assisting federal agents to adhere to state laws. "I encourage anyone in New Mexico who believes they have been subjected to racial profiling to contact our office," he said.
