The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is preparing for its ninth annual Cancer Challenge event on September 20. This event, which includes biking, walking, running, and stair climbing activities, aims to rally community support for the cancer center.
During a recent meeting with the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, board member Brian Rule and Dr. Yolanda Sanchez discussed the upcoming campaign. Rule expressed gratitude for the center's support during his family's experience with cancer. Dr. Sanchez provided details about the event and encouraged community participation.
Participants in the Lobo Cancer Challenge can choose specific programs to support, with all funds raised going directly to those initiatives. The challenge supports various programs such as providing resources for patients traveling from outside Albuquerque, funding pilot programs for cancer research, organizing community awareness events, and offering educational opportunities in cancer research.
In 2024, the challenge saw significant participation with 1,704 individuals across 83 teams raising $652,000 alongside 72 sponsors. GACC Chairman Peter Lorenz praised the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center's achievements and Dr. Sanchez's contributions since joining two years ago.
