The New Mexico Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS), in collaboration with the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, has announced the launch of the New Mexico Archaeology Field Training Program. This initiative, funded by the state legislature for 2025, aims to provide aspiring archaeological field professionals with practical training and experience. The program will run from September 2025 through early 2026 and is open to permanent residents of New Mexico.

Participants can choose between two tracks based on their experience levels. The Field Technician Track requires no prior experience and offers entry-level training in archaeological skills, while the Supervisor Track is designed for those with a B.A./B.S. degree or those close to completing one, focusing on leadership and project management skills.

"This is a unique opportunity for New Mexicans to gain in-demand field skills and get a foot in the door of a growing industry," said OAS Executive Director John Taylor-Montoya, PhD.

The program is free for accepted participants, who will also receive travel support and compensation for their fieldwork. Applicants must be able to work full-time for up to three weeks in challenging environments.

Applications are available online and should be submitted via email. Required documents include proof of residency and academic transcripts for those applying to the Supervisor Track.

The OAS conducts archaeological research across New Mexico with a team dedicated to uncovering and sharing information about historic sites throughout the state. The office supports both state agencies and private organizations needing archaeological studies for development projects.
